There will be an 90-minute Bodhran workshop for advanced beginner/continuing players with Dean Robinson offered in April, 2025.
Blackstone River Theatre will offer a 90-minute workshop geared toward advanced beginner/continuing players on Saturday, April 19, from 11 a.m to 12:30 p.m. The fee for the workshop is $ 25.00 and prepayment is necessary.
This workshop will cover a number of bodhran techniques, including voicing of the bodhran, using accents, and how to play the bodhran at an Irish session. Previous attendance in bodhran classes or similar playing experience required. Minimum of 4 students needed to hold the workshop.These classes are geared towards adults and teens. A minimum of 4 students is needed to hold workshop with a maximum of 8 students. Students must have their own bodhran and tipper.
The bodhran is a small handheld Irish frame drum consisting of a goatskin playing surface stretched over a wooden frame. The drum can be struck with the hand, “finger style,” but most Celtic percussionists strike the drum with a double-headed knobbed stick known as a tipper.
Dean Robinson has has been studying and playing bodhran for the past eight years. Robinson performs with the band Fáilte and also plays regularly at Irish music sessions in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. He attended the 2018 Craiceann Bodhran School in Inis Oirr, Ireland.
